Background
The framed letter that hangs beneath the painting
claims it as an original work by Richard Wilson. It is described as having
been a gift from the artist to a Colonel Brampton-Smith in gratitude to
him for having stood bail for the artist when he got into financial difficulties
in Dublin. The origin and sincerity of the letter are unclear: 610 is
not by Wilsons hand and must be by a follower.
