Background
This, and its companion, in their original (?) gilt gesso surrounds, were probably the end panels of a cassone. The scenes are unidentified. The attribution to the Veronese School is not certain but seems possible. Fritz Heinemann (letter of 6 July 1976) regarded them as early works by Niccolò Giolfino, but he is much too late for these panels, which are still wholly Quattrocento.
