Sometime acquired by the 1st Lord Faringdon;
included in his sale, Sothebys, 13 June 1934, lot 141, when it was
bt by the 2nd Lord Faringdon. COMPANION PICTURE: No 54.

Background
This, and its companion, in their original
(?) gilt gesso surrounds, were probably the end panels of a cassone. The
scenes are unidentified. The attribution to the Veronese School is not
certain but seems possible. Fritz Heinemann (letter of 6 July 1976) regarded
them as early works by Niccolò Giolfino, but he is much too late
for these panels, which are still wholly Quattrocento.
